I’ve always been a firm believer in that the energy you put out into the universe, will in turn, come back to you in a variety of outcomes. I try my best to lead with positivity as much as possible, though obviously, at times it can be more challenging. As I was approaching my birthday in mid-March, a time I’m sometimes anxious about, a switch flipped at some point this year (who knows- blame it on the 80 degree, sunny, flawless weather we’ve been having here in LA), and I was all about celebrating. Not only for my birthday, but for everything else that I feel proud of lately, things that I recognize as important steps in continuing to create a life that brings me joy.

Birthdays can be a time of reflection along with celebration. I’ve been able to embrace both facets this year as the month was filled with spending time with friends, some fun travel, trying new neighborhood spots, and working in a career that is fulfilling and inspiring. Some exciting professional opportunities on the horizon await and I’m ready to kick off another year around the sun!

Coming up on one year of launching this Substack is also something to celebrate! More to come as we move into April, but as always, so thankful you’re here. Enjoy some snaps below from a jam-packed, dare I say, break from reality & unbothered month that was had. My biggest takeaway as I enter a new year is to, when in doubt, turn up the music and dance it out.

In a fast moving consumer economy that we are all accustomed to, it’s become a time-consuming series of trial and error in finding the best-tasting, health conscious, nutrient-enriched snack options in any given grocery store. When it comes to the cereal aisle, I’ve never been a prime customer, but I do love a crunchy granola. I enjoy it on its own, but I love it as a complement to yogurt and berries, or in the mix with some chia pudding.

A few years back, after failing to find exactly what I wanted at the market, or realizing that the product I was purchasing the most was super expensive yet composed of the real ingredients I was looking for, I figured I could probably recreate it at home, more affordably. So, I started to experiment on my own with combinations of oats, nuts, and seeds, customized the sweetness (since so many store-bought granolas are high in sugar), and would bake to the consistency I was looking for. After about a half dozen batches, I finally figured out my sweet spot, go-to granola. Once prepared, it can be stored in mason jars, remaining fresh for weeks. I even like to gift a jar or two for the holidays or as a housewarming present.

The process of making this granola couldn’t be easier, is done in thirty minutes, and still leaves creative license for your own twists and favorite combinations. I make it every few months and it always delivers. Use this recipe as a guide, but experiment to your heart’s (or stomach’s) desire!

Homemade Crunchy Granola:

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Gather all of your components. For this basic healthy granola, you’ll need:

• 2 cups whole grain rolled oats

• 1/2 cup chopped raw walnuts

• 1/2 cup sliced raw almonds

• 1/2 cup raw coconut flakes

• 1/2 cup pepitas (shelled pumpkin seeds)

• 1/4 cup chia seeds

• 1/4 cup hemp seeds

• 2 tbsp cinnamon

• 1/2 tsp sea salt

• 2 tbsp maple syrup or honey

• 2 tbsp melted coconut oil

• 1/4 cup creamy almond butter

2. Combine all dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, drizzle in the wet ingredients, and stir until well combined. Distribute evenly onto the lined sheet pan. I like to press everything into a one-inch thick rectangle. You’ll want to get some clumps of almond butter while baking, so this helps.

3. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove pan, and using a fork, break up the granola rectangle a bit. Rotate the pan halfway and place back into oven to bake for 15 more minutes (or more if you like it extra crunchy). You’ll want a nice golden brown color by the time it’s done. Let sit for 15 minutes before serving or transferring into airtight jars or glass containers. This recipe should fill two to three 16 ounce mason jars.

When it comes to customizing the components of this granola, some options are:

• adding dried fruit (cranberries, goji berries, etc.)

• switching up the nut butter variety

• adding a bit of shaved dark chocolate or tiny cacao chips

Every time I make granola, I’m reminded of this bop from Neil Diamond that I was not only inspired by when seeing Fosse on Broadway decades ago, but then had the privilege of performing to it in my professional dancing days somewhere out at sea. As Neil sings, “crunchy granola’s neat,” so eat up and cheers to your health!

Bouncing back from a tumultuous month of raging storms and true summer temps, I’m happy to be wrapping up this short but sweet little month. As the rest of the country has been dealing with piles of snow, we have been out here in LA enjoying the bright days and clear post-storm skies, as seen above, fresh off a major storm in the neighborhood. I’m grateful for neighbors to turn to in a late night power outage. I’m easy company, just throw me a blanket, bury me underneath, and I’ll be content.

I spent an enormous amount of time watching anything and everything from the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics over the past few weeks. I’m endlessly moved by the dedication and excellence of these athletes from across the globe. I teared up multiple times watching the US Figure Skating Team win the gold medal along with Alysa Liu, an absolute golden girl and icon, creating her own path with fire and grace, winning a gold medal for the US for the first time in over two decades. I also felt for Lindsey Vonn, driven to keep achieving greatness and just falling short. Mad respect. I’ve always loved watching the Olympics, both Winter and Summer, and have such fond memories of being completely engaged as a kid, that I still feel a combination of nostalgia, hope, and awe for these incredible human beings!

I’m looking forward to a quick trip to Las Vegas next month to visit friends and celebrate my birthday, and hopefully keep the celebrations continuing simply throughout the surrounding days. Below, a small snapshot of the month that was.

While the rest of the country is thawing out from the frigid temperatures and snowy days, we’ve been coasting along out here on the west coast with idyllic, can’t beat it, weather. It’s bewildering to be shopping at the outdoor markets for winter produce while wearing shorts and complaining about the sun being too bright (sorry northeast folks)! I know we aren’t through with winter quite yet, so I’m continuing to brainstorm for cold-weather meals, soups and curries are among my favorites lately, to use for the rainy days ahead.

For this installment of Lunch Club, I’m still diving into winter inspired produce, just enhanced with a sprinkling of early spring. One of my favorite vegetables of all time, red cabbage, is thriving this season. I’ve been seeing more and more restaurants make use of it in their menu items, and I’m happy to see it! In my humble opinion, the lowly cabbage is one of the most underrated veggies but packs a champion level of nutrients and an abundance of health benefits.

Red cabbage can be prepared in a variety of ways, raw or cooked. It’s surprisingly easy to roast, saute, or serve sliced up in a salad or slaw. Beyond the appealing color it presents and its affordability, red cabbage should be an easy grab at the market because it provides so many nutritional advantages, including brain power! Red cabbage is a powerful immunity-boosting antioxidant, a great source of dietary fiber, and contains countless important vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins C, K, and B6. It also contains important bone building minerals including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.

Below, highlighting citrus and my beloved red cabbage, these lunch ideas can be enjoyed throughout the rest of the winter season for the ultimate antioxidant building, nutrient dense, and happy at-home lunches.

Lemon Loving Sardine Salad:

Inspired not only by winter produce, but by my favorite mega nutrient-filled protein option, sardines! Hear me out, I know sardines have long been known as a slimy, smelly, crammed in a tin, low on the totem pole fish option, but I am here to make a claim for their superstar health benefits and power! In recent years, tinned fish has really seen an uptick in popularity, due to a whole new generation of protein-searching eaters who appreciate good marketing.

Enter, Fishwife, my favorite tinned fish brand that I’ve been following since their appearance on Shark Tank (which I never miss) over five years ago. Founded in Los Angeles and known for their whimsical branding, this product is top-notch, truly flavorful, responsibly sourced, and never disappoints. There are many more brands launching and stores are increasingly carrying the product, so if you’ve been hesitant to try sardines or other tinned varieties, now is truly the time. One can of sardines provides nearly 20g of protein and a significant amount of Omega-3s, calcium, and Vitamin D.

1. Gather your ingredients. For this salad, you’ll need:

• 1 cup thinly sliced red cabbage

• mix of lettuces (arugula, red butter lettuce, spinach, etc.) to fill large mixing bowl

• 1/2 cup broccoli (raw or steamed, cooled, and chopped)

• 1-2 Persian cucumbers, chopped

• 1/4 cup chopped red onion

• 1 tin of sardines (I used Fishwife with Lemon Preserves)

• 1/2 of an avocado, diced

• small handful of crushed tortilla chips

• 1/2 or whole lemon

• red or white wine vinegar

• EVOO

• salt & pepper

2. Assemble salad by adding all components to a bowl and unpacking the sardines. I even use the olive oil and lemon preserves that the sardines are packed with for extra flavor.

   

   3. Dress the salad with your favorite ratio of EVOO, vinegar, and a healthy squeeze of lemon. I use a half of the lemon, squeezed with a hand-held juicer to maximize the amount. Break up the sardines with a fork. Add a bit of salt & pepper, toss, and enjoy!

   

Winter Cabbage Slaw:

This is a new concoction that I can’t stop making! I’ve been eating a big bowl of this alongside grilled chicken or salmon- really whatever I have leftover from the night before. The cabbage tastes incredibly fresh when sliced from a whole head and maintains its crunch even when completely dressed. The carrots and beets add a touch of sweetness, and increase the nutritional value instantly. The dressing is tangy and sweet, simple enough to throw together in a pinch. I also love to eat this slaw the next day, as the flavors have had a chance to marinate.

1. Prepare the components along with the dressing. You’ll need:

• 1.5 cups thinly sliced red cabbage

• 1.5 cups shredded carrots

• 3/4 cup thinly sliced beets (I use pre-steamed packaged beets from Trader Joe’s)

• 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion

• 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

For the dressing:

• 2 tsp. Dijon mustard

• 1 tsp. maple syrup

• EVOO / apple cider vinegar (3:1 ratio)

• juice squeezed from a clementine or 1 tbsp. fresh squeezed orange juice

• pinch of salt & fresh cracked black pepper

2. Chop all the veggies and add to mixing bowl. Pour dressing components into a large measuring cup and whisk until smooth.

   

3. Pour dressing into bowl, toss until everything is well coated, and let sit for a few minutes so flavors can meld. Serve on its own or alongside your favorite protein. This would also be a great side for a sandwich or wrap!

   

As the season continues to roll along, it’s easy to get into an eating rut, especially since many of us are hibernating, waiting for the days to get longer. I hope these colorful, health-forward lunch ideas can be of inspiration. Cabbage, sardines, beets- yes, maybe some interesting ingredients, but I love incorporating new things into my rotation, especially because of the seasonal benefits that come with these simple additions. Cheers to a healthy remainder of winter!

In what feels like the 300th day of January, I’m happy to finally wrap it up. You’re not alone if you feel like your head has been on a swivel trying to keep up with and digest the chaotic news cycle. In times that feel so overwhelming, it helps to be around others to talk through whatever may be taking up a large capacity of brain space, while still remembering to do what we can to help in our individual pockets of the world.

Now, more than ever, I’ve been relying on mechanisms that are fueled by familiarity and ease. In the recent weeks, there’s been a lot of “turn your brain off” reality TV, outside walks with Ryder (lucky for us in Southern California, we’ve been experiencing a summer heat wave in recent days), movie watching, comfort foods, and books to dive into to offer some distraction.

Last January, Los Angeles was reeling from the horrific wildfires. It was a time of such uncertainty and sadness, but we have slowly started to pick up the pieces as a city. I hadn’t yet ventured to either site since the fires happened, so I drove to the Pacific Palisades this past weekend. Once there, it was a five minute drive through the remnants that completely took my breath away. I felt my chest get immediately tighter as I passed the construction sites where hundreds of homes had once stood along Sunset Boulevard. As I turned onto Temescal Canyon Road, a frequently driven route over the years, there was nothing but blue sky above, rolling green hills in the distance, and a perfectly sandy beach ahead. I was overwhelmingly filled with so much hope, seeing nature’s cyclical power.

I’m happy to be here, glad you’re here with me. Better days ahead! In the meantime, a peek into some January happenings around the greatest city.

January has never been my favorite month (despite my dad’s birthday on 1/1, sorry, Dad!). I would even go as far as to say it’s actually overrated in the aspects of starting fresh and changing up what we have been so comfortable doing for the previous twelve months. I’ve always found it incredibly challenging to jump back into the swing of things after a long break. It could be a wake-up call to myself to move more mindfully through the routine days and weeks. It could also be that the body craves a bit of a slow-down during these peak winter days. I often think of the animals who go into hibernation in the winter months, naturally and purposefully, and wonder if we are meant to emulate that act of nature in a similar way. There is more darkness, colder temperatures, and a craving for cozy nights, especially in January. Despite finding it harder to be productive during this season, I’m doing my best to put my foot on the gas and get back in the groove!

In these first two weeks back to work with clients and in classes, I’ve been talking about having a slow re-entry into our routines. For most of us here in LA, we enjoyed a full two week break to celebrate the holidays. There was time to decompress from the year that was. Many of us were in and out of town, traveling during the busiest time of the year. From what I’ve been hearing from my close circle, it hasn’t been the easiest transition from the break into jam-packed days once again. With that knowledge, I’ve been very intentional with having programs set up for clients to re-build foundations and trust that the body will adjust as it needs. Focusing on breathing, fine-tuning form, and moving with intention have been some pillars I’ve brought into my teaching that will carry through as the year goes on.

Instead of resolutions, I like to take stock of what worked for me throughout the previous year, and carry those habits with me into the next. Below, I’ve put together a handful of practices that have helped me with productivity, mood, and general well-being that I hope to bring into 2026.

1. Slow Mornings:

It suddenly dawned on me. One day this past year when I was feeling rundown and overwhelmed, I knew something had to change. I was feeling that I didn’t have enough time in the day to get everything done that needed to be done; work, take care of Ryder, exercise, eat healthy, sleep, and make time for some fun and even self-care. The only place I could find a block of time that gave me more freedom, were the early mornings. I am, by nature, not a morning person, but I know I needed to change my wake-up time in order to function at my highest potential. Depending on the day, start times do vary, but I’m either in the car or already working by 730/8am each morning. Giving myself a full two hours before I have to be “on” has made a massive difference in the trajectory of my day. I take the time to make coffee, shower or go through a full routine of skin care, read, do the NYT Trifecta (Wordle, Connections, and start the Spelling Bee), walk Ryder, and review the schedule of the day ahead. The time flies, and I often can’t believe a full two hours have gone by. It’s a better way to wake up, for me, easing into the day with less stress, and I look forward to the early mornings (even the darkest winter ones) more than I ever could have thought.

2. Meal Preparation:

The stress of not having food at the ready is just not worth it! Having a busy schedule, with some unconventional hours, I need to be able to have access to fuel at a moment’s notice. I suppose the technical term is “meal prep,” but I tend to do more of an “ingredient prep”. I’ll usually pick two days of the week to prepare a few proteins, some veggie sides (roasted or steamed), a batch of whole grains (rice, farro, pasta), and in these winter months, a hearty soup. Along with some fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, my favorite chia pudding, and plenty of salad components, I’m usually set for the week. I keep it at about 80% for at-home eating, and leave the rest to spontaneous outings or planned dinners with friends, but having food prepped has made such a difference. I’ve already been looking through my trusted cookbooks and searching for new ideas online that I can adapt and add to my rotation!

3. Daily Outdoor Walks:

Getting outside for a walk, no matter how long, is an absolute non-negotiable. Living in Southern California, I’m fully aware that we have an advantage in this department, but that’s the beauty of living here, and one of the many reasons I moved here and continue to love it. The accessibility to neighborhoods built for walking, hiking trails, and beachside paths, are unmatched. Having a dog is also a sure-fire way to get outside, providing enjoyment and benefits to both pup and owner! Lately, I’ve been walking without any distractions- no phone calls, podcasts, or music, and I’ve noticed a positive shift in my focus. I also like to be able to have the option to converse with fellow walkers, as it gives off positive energy that I’d like to continue to be mindful of. No matter what kind of day I’m having, I know that the second I step outside for some fresh air and movement, I instantly feel better. Such a mood-shifter! More to come in a later post on the benefits of nature and moving outdoors.

4. Planned Exercise:

Believe it or not, this is one of the most challenging elements of my weekly routine to schedule and complete. In a perfect world, I’d weight train multiple times a week, take a Pilates Reformer class once a week, and do yoga from home at least once a week. Because of my schedule, and when class times are typically offered, it’s harder to get in to my preferred classes. My job is also physical so I’m often running on a low battery at the end of the day, when I’d have time to jump into class or lay down my yoga mat at home. I’ve made it a habit of getting into at least two classes a week (one for weight training and one for Pilates) by scheduling both at the beginning of the week. As my week decreases in intensity, I’m able to fit it in a session. Seeing it on my calendar keeps me accountable. I’m lucky enough to be able to “work out” with my clients, so I’ll take it where I can get it, but I love being able to completely turn off my brain and have someone else tell me what to do for an hour.

5. Reading Every Day:

One of the most enjoyable habits that has become part of my daily routine is picking up a book and sitting down to read it with no distractions. I try to carve out a few pockets during the day to make time for 15-20 minutes of reading. If I’m lucky, I can make it through one book a week. I exceeded my goal of 50 books in 2025, so I upped it a bit for this year, and would love to hit that goal too! There’s something magical about reading a book. I love the anticipation of what is to come, and the escape that comes with it is a genuine reward. As I’ve mentioned before, I have a hyper brain, so anything I can do to calm my nervous system and create moments of quiet, I take them when I get them.

6. Mindful Spending:

Living in a consumer-based society, it’s hard not to fall victim to the endless promotional ads and e-mails we receive on a daily basis. This year, more than ever, I want to be truly mindful about how and where I spending money. Am I choosing a local small business over a mass market chain? Am I purchasing goods made with ethically sourced elements or ingredients? Am I buying something that I actually need and will get ample use out of? I love to shop in person as much as possible, especially in my neighborhood where we have everything at our fingertips, and can make connections with the shop owners and familiar employees. I’ve become more of a minimalist over the years (except when it comes to sneakers!), and it serves me well, as I have very little storage space and like to get proper use out of everything that is purchased.

7. Home Refresh:

My beef with January can be put on hold when I get back from holiday travel and attack my apartment with cleaning gusto! If good for one thing, I’ll let January guide me to get my physical space in order, updating items that need a refresh and starting with a clean slate. I’ll do a full fridge restock, go through the pantry and get rid of what may be expired, switch out the shower curtain, get rid of excess products in the bathroom vanity, and load up on some new towels for the kitchen and bath. This year, I have some extremely happy plants that are continuing to multiply, so I’m working on propagating them to eventually transfer to proper pots with soil. I’ll also do a mini closet clean-out, since that is actually something I’m on top of throughout the course of the entire year. A good deep clean is the final step in making sure the living environment is also set up for success.

January is already in full swing, and as much as I can plan for all of these things to happen perfectly as planned, there will always be deviations. With the implementation of simple, productive habits, I’m looking forward to the year ahead to create consistency and space to grow. There is no perfect day, week, month, or year, but the small moments in between can start to feel like they matter, hopefully opening the door for opportunities abound.

As the curtain falls on 2025, one filled with twists and turns, I’m excited to turn the page to a bright year ahead. Keeping things short for this final post of the year, I want to thank everyone who has joined me on this new writing adventure. What started as just an idea, has grown into something that I look forward to working on consistently while allowing my thoughts to land in a safe place, and most importantly, sharing with all of you.

Instead of New Year’s resolutions, I like to take stock of the positives and negatives from the year and let them evolve with the new year ahead, either flipping the page or building on what has already been activated. I’m looking forward to continuing all that has been built here on Substack- more recipes, workouts, recommendations, and pro tips to make it a healthy 2026! Wishing a Happy New Year to all!

In a high-velocity paced sprint to the end of the year, the periods of quiet and rest are never easy to find. Amongst the holiday parties, endless to-do lists, and daunting travel plans, a moment of calm is a welcome respite. I’ve always found that in these final weeks of the year, no matter how prepared you can be, the tasks always sneak up on us. Routines fall out of whack, eating healthy becomes more challenging, and less time is available to make it to a workout session.

For me, as long as I can fit some sort of movement in a few times a week during the holiday season, I know I’ll keep it together. The biggest challenge, I find, is setting aside the time to give my mind a break and relieve the stress that has been building up as the final push of the year is actively in motion.

Centering the mind and focusing on breathing can be two very powerful skills during the holidays. Whether you’re preparing to host a houseful of guests, traveling across the country, or wrapping up a major project at work, carving out the time to separate from your busy mind is critical. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to be clear-minded and fresh to visit with friends and relatives while keeping up the stamina needed for holiday gatherings. On the other hand, something I’ve figured out over time, you’ll want to sneak away for five minutes to catch your breath.

In general, stretching can improve many facets of our daily lives. From relieving anxiety and depression, to quite literally hitting the “reset button” on your day, a few minutes of detoxifying movement can be just what the body needs.

When performed with mindful breathing, stretching stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, or simply, what many studies have labeled, the “rest & digest” system. The Cleveland Clinic further describes it as “a network of nerves that relaxes your body after a period of stress or danger.” In everyday life, we rely on this nervous system to keep ourselves regulated. As an involuntary reaction regulated system, we do not control the start and stop button, but with a deeper breathing and stretching practice, along with mindfulness, we can begin to channel a sense of homeostasis on our own command.

Follow along below for five soothing stretches to focus on centering, restoring, and de-stressing during the holiday season. Hit play on your favorite calming playlist, find a comfortable spot, and dim the lights.

*Dog not required but highly recommended!

1. Seated Side Stretch & Rotation: To begin, sit in a comfortable seated position (usually butterfly or cross-legged). If you need extra support under the hips, place a folded mat or towel beneath the pelvis or sit on a yoga block. Once centered, place one hand far to the side while reaching other arm over head, palm facing down. Take a deep inhale to reach laterally overhead to the side, keeping the heart forward. Exhale to return to center while placing hand down and switch sides. Repeat a few times, taking time to hold for a few moments. Next, take one hand directly behind your hips on the floor and other hand to that same side’s ankle. Press into back hand, inhale, rotate around spine looking over the shoulder, lengthening out of the hips. Exhale, return to center, switch sides, and repeat a few more times.

2. Cat/Cow & Child’s Pose: Comfortably rest on hands and knees in a neutral spine position. Take a big inhale as you open the heart, drop the belly, and lift the hips. Exhale as you roll through center, dropping chin to chest, rounding the spine, and dropping the hips. Repeat 3-5 times. Send hips back towards heels to land in Child’s Pose with knees separated and arms reaching long and forward. Reach both arms to one side while the hips move towards the other. Take a few inhales and exhales for each side. This stretch is nice to hold for 30-45 seconds.

3. Downward Dog: Begin in a hands/knees position with a neutral spine once more. On the inhale, lift hips up towards ceiling, pressing into arms while lengthening legs behind you so that they are as extended as possible, with the slightest bend of the knees. Exhale, and settle into the stretch. The goal is to get the heels all the way down, but do not worry if they don’t touch the floor. Play with a distance that works for you with hands away from feet. Pedal through the feet while bending one leg at a time or lift and lower both heels slowly. Keep the breath consistent. Aim for about 60 seconds to hold this stretch. To come out of it, gently place knees back to the floor.

4. Seated Spinal Twist: Sit with feet extended in front of your hips, using a prop under the pelvis if needed. Fold one leg and place the foot on the outside of opposite leg, in line with knee. Reach the arm closest to the folded leg back and to the outside of the same shoulder. Opposite arm settles on the inside of the folded leg with palm facing out. Inhale on the twist as you use press away from the floor to lengthen up, and exhale on the return to center. This stretch can be held for 15-20 seconds as long as the breath continues consistently. Repeat on the other side.

5. Roll Down/Up & Foldover Stretch: Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulders to begin. Roll down like a rag doll, bone by bone, until the body is folded over and relaxed. Keep a slight bend in knees as you grab opposite elbows and sway side to side for a few breaths. Let the arms hang long as you begin to roll up bone by bone, with the head coming up last. Inhale, rolling through the shoulders, and exhale to settle grounded and upright.

After you feel stretched out and at ease, it’s always a treat to continue to wind down with a hot cup of peppermint tea, as it is known to promote relaxation while decreasing stress and anxiety- a perfect pairing! Take advantage of the quiet moments over the next few weeks. Listen to what your body needs and always give yourself the chance to hit that reset button. This has been a year filled with hurdles, so approaching the end of it, I’m grateful to have managed to find ways to recalibrate along the way. As November draws to a close, a natural period of reflection begins to take shape. For me, it feels like a perfect moment to give thanks to everyone who has joined me on this new venture. I’m so grateful to have a space that is an extension of my every day life, a holding place for ideas, an experiment of sorts, and another way to connect. It’s been a season of stepping outside my comfort zone, time reorganization, and consistent idea farming, but I’m so glad, after plenty of hesitation and second-guessing, that I decided to jump in to carve out a tiny corner of the internet for us.

Here in LA, we recently had a long week of rain, which was much needed, but afterward, brought about crisp blue skies and ideal temperatures, perfect for long walks in the neighborhood. A special pup celebrated his sixth birthday the day before Thanksgiving, so this past week was extra celebratory. Happy Birthday to my boy!

For Thanksgiving, we have a beautiful tradition here in our West Hollywood apartment building, where we gather 15-20 of our closest neighbors (and Ryder) to have a poolside feast. I tend to contribute this homemade stuffing (by request) and fresh cranberry sauce each time. For those of us who don’t travel for the holiday, it’s been the best day of the year here in our building, ever since we started five years ago. I feel so lucky to have kind and generous neighbors- it really makes a difference! I also love being in town for this holiday week to spontaneously make plans while the city is quiet, take some time to slow down, and get in some good workouts with friends.

The sun seems to be setting earlier each day here in Southern California, leaving me with a feeling that there is more to get done in a single day in shorter period of time. With that comes a natural inclination to fire up some hearty soups and warm, filling meals for dinner, followed by wrapping up in a blanket, catching up on a good TV series, and recharging for the next day. Lunches, for me, are harder to figure out this time of year. Most of us are just over it, having had to come up with lunch ideas for the past ten months. I’m here to help- let’s keep it going until the end of 2025 and beyond!

In Los Angeles, feeling the first chill in the air brings a sense of familiarity to me. Growing up on the east coast where we experience the four seasons in all of their glory, the 300 days of sunshine out here can make this east coast girl yearn for some cooler weather and the chance to break out my sweaters and heavier coats. I love cooking full meals in the oven during the fall season because of the rich and flavorful produce that shines during the season. When paired with a healthy protein, balanced dinners come easy, leaving lunches more of a puzzle to figure out.

We are in peak apple, pomegranate, squash, and root vegetable season. Hearty, leafy greens are also having a moment. One of my fondest fall memories growing up was going to our local orchard, Strawberry Acres, to pick bushels of apples by way of riding through the rolling fields on an open-top recycled school bus with hay bales for seats. Second best to that, here in my neighborhood, I’m still able to enjoy the fall bounty (on foot) from the local farms at our farmers market.

For the latest installment of Lunch Club, I’ve put together two quick and easy ideas using similar seasonal ingredients, as well as some elements that you can prepare in advance to use for other meals throughout the week. As we are approaching a busy holiday week, most of us will likely be preparing numerous dishes to bring to a Thanksgiving gathering. If you’re doing the heavy lifting by hosting, your plate will be overflowing with to-do lists and never-ending tasks. Hopefully these lunch ideas will be great to have on hand in the midst of endless preparation or for when you’re tired of turkey leftovers!

For your shopping trip:

For both of these recipes, I like to shred the chicken in advance, which I’ll keep refrigerated until I’m ready to use in smaller quantities. The easiest way to end up with perfectly shredded chicken that doesn’t taste dry is to boil two boneless breasts until they reach 165 degrees internally (about 15-20 minutes), let cool, and toss in a stand mixer to shred at a medium speed using the paddle attachment for thirty seconds. Fool proof and quick!

Harvest Chicken & Greens:

First up- a hearty, nutrient dense, protein filled salad perfectly suited for these fall months! Since I usually have most of these ingredients on hand, including the leftover roasted sweet potatoes, I started playing with different combinations where I could replicate an expensive cafe salad that tastes just as delicious but requires minimal effort. Quick tip: If you have your chicken and sweet potatoes ready to go from a day or two before, the rest is a breeze.

1. Gather the ingredients:

   

• 1 cup shredded chicken

• Arugula and red butter lettuce (or whichever greens you prefer) for the base, roughly chopped; enough to fill a large mixing bowl

• 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

• 1/2 cup red cabbage, chopped

• 1/4 cup red onion, diced

• 1/2 cup roasted sweet potatoes (done beforehand or chopped into cubes with EVOO, salt & pepper, and roasted at 425 degrees for 40 minutes)

• 1/4 cup beets (I buy them steamed, peeled, and ready to eat), diced

• 1-2 tbsp. goat cheese

• Half of an apple, chopped into cubes

• 1 tbsp. shaved almonds

• 1 tbsp. dried cranberries

• Extra Virgin Olive Oil

• Balsamic vinegar and/or balsamic glaze

• Pinch of salt & fresh ground black pepper

2. Heat up the shredded chicken and sweet potato cubes (if made before) in a skillet. Add the remaining ingredients plus the chicken and sweet potatoes to a large mixing bowl. Mix well.

   

3. Dress it up. For the dressing, I like to use a 3:1 ratio of EVOO to balsamic vinegar. I just eyeball it, drizzle on top, and mix. Recently, I’ve been adding a bit of balsamic glaze, which gives the salad even more depth. Highly recommend! It’s like fall in a bowl, even here in Los Angeles!

   *Note: You can substitute any other fall vinaigrette that you’d prefer, I just tend to keep it simple.

   

Cape Cod Cranberry Chicken Salad:

I’ve spent plenty of seasons on Cape Cod, fall being one of my favorites. My grandmother’s birthday happens to be at the end of October, so we’ve been celebrating the milestone birthdays there when possible. Not only is the weather perfect, but the scenery is picturesque, and it is peak cranberry harvesting season. I was never a chicken salad person, but a few years ago, in October when I was visiting, I found a great one at a local market. The cranberries were the most flavorful and made me a convert. I’ve been trying to figure out their recipe ever since! So, here’s my take on the easiest (and tastiest) chicken salad you can possibly make.

1. Gather your ingredients:

• 2 cups shredded chicken

• 1/4 of a red onion, diced

• 2 celery stalks, finely chopped

• 1/2 cup dried cranberries

• 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt or mayo (or a combination of both)

• 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard

• Pinch of salt & fresh ground black pepper

2. Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and mix well until everything is combined.

3. Once everything is combined, I like to put the mixed chicken salad into a sealed container and let sit in the refrigerator for a few hours so that the flavors can meld. If you’re in a rush, dive in, I promise it still tastes great! One of my favorite ways to eat this for lunch is in heaping scoops on top of my favorite sturdy crackers from Trader Joe’s- the Trail Mix Crackers!

   

Launching into the holiday season this week, as crazy as this time of year can get, I hope everyone is able to find some moments of calm. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in everything that is going on- events, parties, family functions- while still trying to maintain a sense of balance. Hoping these simple ideas can help ease the troubles of figuring out how to put together a healthy lunch for yourself or your family in the time of year when it can be the most difficult.

During the holidays, in my Italian family of voracious eaters, warm appetizers, vegetable trays, and assorted snacks are never enough. I’ve become the official charcuterie board builder over the past few years, AKA “the keeper of the cheese.” I’ve actually grown to look forward to taking on the challenge, and with the holidays quickly approaching, I thought I’d share some tips for shopping for crowd-pleasing components and assembling your own board like a pro!

Purchase the Components:

Any board in the making begins with a trip to your favorite market or grocery store. Since the larger boards I’ve worked on for the holidays were back home in Pennsylvania, I have always enjoyed taking a trip to the Allentown Farmers Market to look for many of the components. This community landmark is always a one-stop shop because the local vendors have everything you could ever need plus some. I love picking up different types of cheeses, unique varieties of olives, assorted pickles, and fresh fruit.

To begin your shopping, remember that the cheese is the star of the show. It’s best to choose three or four types of hard cheeses and one soft cheese to stand on its own. Some favorites are:

• Cheddar

• Manchego

• Gouda

• Pecorino Romano

It’s important to take into account the different colors, textures, and degree of intensity. For your soft cheese, Brie is always a crowd pleaser, but options are endless. If you have access to a Trader Joe’s, never underestimate their selection, especially during the holidays. You can also ask their knowledgeable workers- they will never steer you wrong.

Many will argue that the meat options take center stage, so choose wisely. Aim for two or three different sliced cured meats to accompany the cheeses. Some top choices are:

• Peppered Salami

• Prosciutto

• Pepperoni

• Chorizo or Kielbasa

• Capicola

To complement the cheese and meat, a variety of crackers is a must. Your guests will want a cracker that can hold some weight- you never know who will go overboard due to hungry eyes! I love to find one unique cracker such as a Fig & Olive Crisp, plus something universally loved, like a flatbread style Sourdough cracker. Thin breadsticks rising out of a glass are a fun detail for an element of height.

Next, it’s time for accompaniments to sprinkle throughout the board. Look for:

• Red or Green grapes

• Blackberries

• Fresh Cranberries

• Sliced Pickles or Cornichons

• Olives (Castelvetrano are my favorite)

• Assorted nuts

• Dark Chocolate

• Dried fruit (figs, mangoes, cranberries)

• A full-flavored mustard

Assemble with Creativity for Presentation:

When choosing your board, the bigger, the better. You’ll want a strong wooden surface, round or rectangular. In addition, choose an assortment of smaller bowls and glasses to contain the filler elements or add some height for a visual effect.

Next, slice the various cheeses into differing shapes. Play with cubes, triangles, and rectangle slices, depending on the consistency of each variety. For the meat, I like to roll up each piece and arrange by type. As you begin assembling, use your creative eye to decide where everything will live. Play with symmetry or make it totally random. Add rows of crackers to act as barriers; they also bode well for creating distinct sections. Artistic license fully permitted.

Finally, fill in the gaps. Add your pops of color with the remaining items. Place a shot glass filled with toothpicks in one corner or fill a Champagne coupe with Dijon mustard. Rest tiny cocktail forks and decorative napkins to the side, and ‘voila!’, you’re on the way to becoming a charcuterie board artiste!

Remember, once the first person dives in, your hard work may be over, but the enjoyment just begins. Knowing that your work of art will eventually be demolished, don’t become too attached to your masterpiece! Not only will guests be impressed by your professional looking charcuterie board, they will be entertained, and most likely requesting one in advance for the next gathering.

Here I am wrapping up another month faster than I can believe. West Hollywood is in full swing for Halloween today- most roads in my neighborhood are closed for the Halloween Carnaval, a West Hollywood tradition that has been taking place annually for almost 40 years. I love wandering down to Santa Monica Boulevard (where the festivities happen at night) during the day to see all of the prep work that goes into putting on such a massive event. It is no easy feat to prepare for, as they usually expect hundreds of thousands of observers and participants- movie magic in real time right in our backyard. Ryder gets into the Halloween spirit too, trick-or-treating his way down the boulevard, collecting snacks from all of our local shops.

If you saw my last post, I mentioned that I had taken a trip back east for my cousin Anna’s wedding(s). When I say wedding(s), it’s true! We had the privilege to take part in not one, but two beautiful ceremonies for Anna and her new husband, Akhil, on two separate days. They also had an evening of blessings the night before the first wedding ceremony, reserved for immediate family. I was riveted listening to the highlights from my aunt and uncle when I arrived that evening. The next day, we attended their timeless outdoor wedding ceremony and reception, followed by a stunning Indian ceremony on Sunday morning. Both days were filled with traditions, blessings, vibrant colors, an extravaganza of food & sweet treats, and celebrating galore.

I was so impressed that Anna and Akhil were still standing by the end of the weekend after so much socializing and excitement. They looked incredible and were completely surrounded by love the entirety of the three-day celebration. I always wish we could spend more time together but my cousin cup is full, and I was so honored to be a part of our sweet Anna’s special weekend.

Even though Anna and I didn’t live very close to each other growing up, or even now in our adult lives, we have spent countless summers in Cape Cod together, and have made plenty of visits to wherever one of us may have been living, filled with quality time, rather than just a few hours here and there. When it came time for photos during the reception, we asked my dad to take a few, and all he could say was, “I’ve been taking the same photo of these girls their entire lives!” Yes, yes he has, and many more to come.

I have to give a very special shoutout to our Grammy, who turned 103 last week! She’s truly amazing. If we could all learn a little something about longevity from her, it would be to read every day, keep moving, and do the puzzles!

The recent weeks have flown by! I’m back from the east coast yet again, settling into my routine after a whirlwind of a trip to Virginia and Washington, DC to celebrate my cousin’s wedding(s) with family and friends. More to come on this beautiful weekend of celebrations next week. I haven’t visited that pocket of the country in many years, and I must say, not only was the scenery beautiful, but it was so nice to experience a bit of fall with some cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and cozy meals.

Surrounding the wedding festivities and three extra days in Washington, DC, I made it seamlessly in and out of LAX, plus both DC airports- a miracle! Not to bore anyone with airport stories, I’ll skip right to the meat of this post— staying clear-minded and as comfortable as possible while navigating airports and flying in general.

In a perfect world, we would all put ourselves through a full workout before heading to the airport, to ensure that everything is in alignment with the hope of gaining some extra energy to traipse through any given airport at any time of day. Of course, I’m fully aware that for 99% of us, with everything going on to prepare for the trip, and time-a-ticking, it’s a wonder that we can manage to pack accordingly, hop in an Uber, and arrive at the gate on time.

On my most recent flight, I had a lovely seat mate who I struck up a conversation with who happens to be a dental hygienist. We are both LA based so had plenty to talk about on our five-hour flight. Of course, what we do for a living came up quickly, and her interest was piqued, as she is a long-time practitioner of Pilates, mainly to help with her posture since she’s been working as a hygienist for over thirty years. It’s been a crucial part of her maintenance as she’s hunched forward most of her days while working with patients. I loved hearing her success story, especially the consistency in which she makes it to class, backing up my broken-record point, that consistency is key in any method of exercise.

I think about it often, but had never compiled an official list of tips and effective exercises to try out before, during, and after a flight, until now. Listed and shown below are some of my favorite ways to help the body remain in a state of equilibrium, despite being disrupted by so many uncontrollable factors on a travel day.

Before a flight:

1. Cruise the terminal at a decent pace- get in those steps!

2. Hydrate! Purchase a fresh bottle of water, the bigger the better.

3. Pick up some healthy snacks or meal that can be easily brought on board.

4. Drown out the noise from the airport chaos with a good playlist or podcast.

During the flight:

Every hour or so, if you’re not sleeping, put yourself through this quick series of seated and standing stretches. I broke them into two videos to clearly differentiate the sequences. I also like to do a few walks up and down the aisle to make sure I’m not getting stuck at my seat. I’ve gotten into the habit of visiting the flight attendants, passing off a book I finished, or simply throwing something away. I’m an aisle seat girl, so I take advantage of being able to stretch my legs while seated as much as I can. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. You’ll feel the difference in the days ahead, not only in your muscles, but your skin will thank you as well.

After the flight:

Once you reach your destination- home, a hotel, or wherever you ground yourself, it’s important to rebuild proper circulation as soon as possible. The series below will help with recalibrating, so try it out wherever you feel comfortable. One other thing I like to do once I’m settled, is to get outside for a walk to find my bearings in whatever neighborhood I’ve ended up in. Walking brings everything full-circle, even though you’re always a long way from where the day originally began.

For Increasing Circulation:

1. Head circles (just forward range of motion)

2. Shoulder Rolls

3. Ankle Circles

4. Cat/Cow

5. Standing Hip Openers

   There are so many moving parts involved with traveling these days, especially with heightened delays, long lines, agitated passengers, and travel restrictions. I find that the more I can streamline my trip, whether it be bringing minimal baggage, making sure I have a good book and some downloaded movies, and plenty of food to keep up my mood, I’m good to go. Adding in some movement is a welcome bonus. No matter what type of flight you’re jumping on next, get out of that seat, keep moving, and safe travels!

As I was walking Ryder one morning last week, I’m doing my best to keep him on one side of the sidewalk as a neighbor was walking up the hill carrying some grocery bags stuffed to the brim. As he’s coming closer to us, Ryder decides to spontaneously zig-zag across the sidewalk not once but twice, confusing our fellow walker and causing me to quickly tug on the leash, yanking him to one side. In a touching moment of humanity, I apologize immediately, saying “he can’t make up his mind on where he’s going this morning,” and the neighbor laughs and responds, “It’s totally fine, we’re all doing that same thing every day, aren’t we?”. Of course we are. He nailed it, and left me with something to think about as we continued on our way.

As we enter these final months of the year, and what a complex year it has been, I want to make sure I’m not losing track of what remains important. It’s so easy to become engrossed by everything going on around us and all the changes that seem to be imminent and overwhelming. Instead of perpetual worry, I’m jumping in full force to make sure I’m able to control what I can. Picking my battles. Letting some things go. Locking in.

This past month disappeared before my eyes, filled with getting organized on the business side of things, finalizing upcoming travel plans, and a busy slate of work. On top of all the must-do tasks, I was diligent in making sure I was able to take part in some sort of daily movement along with eating enough healthy meals, mostly made at home- I simply feel better that way. So thankful for my local Trader Joe’s, still the best deals around.

Speaking of locking in, we are rooting with full hearts for the Phillies to take it all this year! Red October- here we come! I have a good feeling about this playoff run (starting this weekend), but I’m sure every day before the games, will be completely nauseous and unable to focus. I wish I could control it, but it’s in my blood, and the fandom runs deep. We’re talking generations deep. Writing letters to the Phillies organization at eight years old deep to make them aware of a statistics mistake in the 1993 Phillies yearbook. Let’s go Phils. 2025 needs this!

Is anyone else feeling the rhythm of a busy fall schedule like I am? I’m always surprised by how quickly things pick back up after the lazy late summer days finally wrap up. It’s taken me a few weeks to get into a groove, but I feel like I’m now in it and ready for the rest of the season, which officially starts today! With that comes making sure I have enough food for fuel at the ready. When I’m in transit and don’t have enough time for a full meal, I’ve become reliant on nutrient-filled healthy snacks to keep me going through the next client session or class.

Having accessible protein-rich snacks has become so important in my day to day life. With an active lifestyle, making sure I have some options prepped and ready to go has improved my daily eating habits and has greatly reduced the amount of wasteful stops for $20 smoothies or snacks that have too much sugar with ingredients that aren’t even pronounceable.

In the past few years, the hype around protein has really escalated, and I’m here to say that yes, it’s being talked about more and more, especially with the muscle building emphasis that we are seeing currently, but it has always been important! Even as a kid, as I would run from activity to activity, my parents made sure I always had enough to hold me over, even if it wasn’t a full meal. I think back to those times and feel bad for them because I would definitely turn into a monster if I hadn’t eaten enough, but protein was usually the cure-all, even if it was a Whopper Jr. in the backseat of the minivan!

With everything that we know about protein today, I’ve come up with a rotation of snacks that I continuously reach for when I’m on the go. Pure protein sources are always best, but in a pinch, we do have options, they just require some planning ahead. The recipes below all include enough protein, fiber, and healthy fats to make for satisfying options. This post is going to do exactly that- snacks on the go- not snacks to sit at home and savor. More on that another time! We should all aim, over the course of one day, to consume adequate protein conditional to our lifestyles.

The Mayo Clinic recommends the following in regards to protein consumption and the individual:

• An average adult: 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight

• If between age 40-50, because of the occurrence of muscle mass loss, 1-1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight

• A regular exerciser needs a bit more, 1.2-1.7 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight

On to the good stuff- keep reading for some grab & go snack ideas, or just some healthy inspiration!

Pumpkin Protein Muffins:

These muffins are the perfect healthy fall snack. I’ve adapted this recipe from The Oregon Dietician to make it a bit more suitable to my preferences. You’ll need:

• 1 1/4 cups flour- your choice but I prefer Einkorn flour which has a higher nutrient density, more protein, and less gluten than All-Purpose flour

• 1/2 cup protein powder (vanilla or unflavored)

• 1 1/2 tsp baking soda

• 2 tsp cinnamon

• 1/2 tsp ground ginger

• 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice or combination of nutmeg and cloves

• 1/2 cup coconut sugar or less (depending on your taste)

• 2 large eggs

• 1 can (15 oz.) of pumpkin puree

• 1/4 cup avocado oil or any neutral oil

• 1/4 cup plain Greek Yogurt

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• mini chocolate chips (optional)

To make:

1. Combine all dry ingredients in bowl and mix.

2. Combine all wet ingredients including coconut sugar in bowl and whisk until smooth.

3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, fold in chocolate chips if using, and stir until just combined.

4. Divide batter into 12 muffin cups and bake at 375 degrees for about 22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

These should give you about 9 grams of protein in each muffin, while also packing in fiber and healthy fats.

Peanut Butter Protein Balls:

These are a staple in my freezer! I make sure I always have these stocked because they are so easy and perfect for when you’re running out the door. There are endless ways to make a protein ball, but I’ve streamlined mine so that I always have the ingredients on hand and can make them in ten minutes. You’ll need:

• 1 cup creamy natural peanut butter

• 1/2 cup rolled oats

• 1/3 cup protein powder of your choice

• 1 tbsp chia seeds

• 1 tbsp hemp seeds

• 2 tsp honey

• handful of mini chocolate chips (optional)

• 2-4 tsp water (can adjust as you go)

To make:

1. Combine all ingredients in a metal bowl and mix to combine by hand or with a wooden spoon.

2. If the mixture feels too dry, add a teaspoon of water at a time to make more pliable.

3. Roll into 1-inch balls on a parchment lined baking sheet.

4. Leave in freezer to solidify for a few hours, then transfer to a container to leave in freezer for easy access.

5. When ready to grab one for the road, let thaw for about 10 minutes before eating.

You’ll get about 9 grams of protein with each ball, so they’re perfect for a quick boost before a workout, on the way to a class, or even to save for a recharge during your work day.

Raspberry Chia Seed Pudding w/ Greek Yogurt & Granola:

My favorite late morning pick-me-up; this chia seed pudding concoction is something that I crave on a regular basis and is, again, so easy! Chia pudding is such a valuable source of fiber that can satiate you for hours, and it takes only a few minutes to prep for the week. You can eat the chia seed pudding on its own, but I seem to always add a few more components for flavor and to make it extra filling. For this foolproof recipe that gives you about four servings, you’ll need:

• 4 tbsp chia seeds

• 1 cup milk of your choice (I use an almond/cashew/macadamia blend)

• 1-2 tsps maple syrup (add more if you like it sweeter)

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

To make:

1. Combine all ingredients in one bowl and stir until chia seeds are evenly distributed.

2. Let sit for ten minutes to thicken.

3. Stir again, cover, and place in refrigerator for a few hours or overnight until ready to eat.

To make the Yogurt/Chia Pudding Blend:

1. Take a scoop of chia pudding, 1/2 cup greek yogurt, raspberries (I like to use frozen berries which I thaw for about 20 minutes so the juices run into the bowl), and whatever crunchy element you prefer (sliced almonds, pepitas, or granola).

2. Mix to combine and enjoy!

This combo is completely customizable to your preferences, and offers many health benefits, including healthy doses of fiber, protein, probiotics, and essential vitamins to keep you going throughout the day.

Pineapple Mango Smoothie:

As far as smoothies go, I like to keep it pretty simple, and again, filled with protein, fiber, and healthy fats. This pineapple mango smoothie is one of my favorites; it’s refreshing and transplants you immediately to a tropical island. Now, I always eyeball the amount of fruit I use, and you can do the same. Adjust it to your taste, try out different combinations, and use this as a guide. I love adding a handful of spinach to this one as well, especially if you’re in need of some more greens for the day.

You’ll need:

• Handful of frozen mango and pineapple

• 1/4 of a frozen banana

• 1/4 cup Greek yogurt

• 1/2 cup coconut water (may need more depending on your other measurements)

• Splash of orange juice (optional)

• 1-2 tbsp protein powder (vanilla or unflavored)

• 1 tbsp hemp seeds

• 1/2 tsp ground turmeric

To make, combine all ingredients in blender, blend until smooth, pour in a glass, and drink up! This smoothie should pack around 30 grams of protein.

My Top Snack Brands:

When I’m going through my day, I’m usually equipped for a snack emergency, not only for myself, but for anyone else who may need something. Some of my favorites that you can pick up at most grocery retailers are:

• Chomps sticks- pure animal protein and zero sugar

• Karma wrapped cashews- this brand rocks!

• Shelled pistachios- perfect for snacking in the car

• Aloha or Misfits bars- these are both low sugar, high protein bars made with plant-based protein

• Sardines- Yes, you read that correctly! I can’t say I’ve eaten these on the road yet, but I do enjoy them at home in a variety of different ways which I will share soon. I have a deep affinity for the tinned fish corner of the universe.

Superfood Sources:

Of all the protein powder brands out there, I’ve become a recent fan of Truvani. This particular brand makes a clean ingredient, organic, pea protein offered in a variety of flavors. I also love adding chia seeds and hemp seeds which pack a punch in nutrients. Chia seeds are excellent for fiber and calcium, while hemp seeds provide additional protein, healthy fats and minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. I use these two varieties of seeds in most of the recipes provided, as they are such an easy way to add more superfoods to our systems.

In a season of jam-packed schedules, activities to attend, and kids to shuffle around, I hope this medley of snack options provides some ease and satisfied bellies. We can all hope for good moods all around, and I am a firm believer in the benefits of healthy food to increase overall wellness. I always have to be reminded that the gut is the gateway to the brain, and has a real hold on us, so the smarter we fuel up, the better we feel. I hope you enjoy these recipes and have fun customizing them too!

In recent years, the talk of the importance of strength training has increased immensely. Not a week goes by where the topic doesn’t come up, whether it be clients asking questions about the importance of muscle building or reading about it in an article that crosses my path. As a fitness professional and forever student of the craft, I am continually reading up on new studies and current statistics that are occurring in the fitness world. As lifestyles evolve and change, so do the ways we need to exercise to produce optimal outcomes for overall health. In a nutshell, muscle is king! No negotiation needed. As we get older, especially my generation, now entering our 40s, building muscle is an absolute must. Along with consuming adequate protein throughout the day, strength training with heavy weights 2-3 times a week will increase the quality of your life- I’ve experienced it first hand and am always encouraging others to try it as well.

Since I do have the opportunity to see so many different types of people in a class setting when I’m teaching Pilates, not a week goes by without someone coming up to me after class to ask, “What else should I be doing to build strength?”. I always suggest adding a weight training program to their routine. I have a couple of studios in my neighborhood that I confidently recommend to Pilates class clients, including Bunda, which focuses on emphasizing building strength in the glutes while combining the cardio element of StairMaster circuits, and the Nike Training Studio, which provides overall cardio and strength training, using kettle bells, dumbbells, and other exercise tools to get such a huge bang for your buck. In addition to taking my weekly Pilates reformer class, I push myself to make it to one of these studios once a week, and am so grateful for the training they provide. I notice a significant difference if I’m not keeping up with it, not only physically, but mentally as well.

The benefits of strength training are endless, but some highlights are:

• Proven boost in longevity

• Rise in mood and overall well-being

• Increased bone density & improved balance

• Elevated metabolism

• Reduced risk in injury & common disease

• Enhanced mental well-being and cognitive function

• Noticeable ease of performing basic daily tasks/activities

After all of these years as an instructor of varying forms of dance and exercise, I believe that the perfect combination to live a consistently healthy and efficient lifestyle is the trifecta of Pilates, strength training, and consistent cardiovascular output. Of course, there are many other modalities to mix in for variety, such as yoga and Barre, but for the time constraints that most people have, these three are the secret sauce! As far as pure cardio goes, I get mine mainly from walking- the perk of having a pup like Ryder! I’m lucky to live in a hilly neighborhood, so I get my cardio fix most days that way. Despite running track for a short while in high school, and dancing for 25 years, I have to really be pushed to do cardio in any other way! It’s something that I do want to make more of a priority in the next year for my own cardiovascular health.

I was recently listening to an interview with Dr. Martha Gulati, a preventive cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center here in Los Angeles, about a study conducted based on the strength training habits of 400,000 adults in the United States. After obtaining results, as an author of the study, she says, “What surprised us the most was the fact that women who do muscle-strengthening activity had a reduction in their cardiovascular mortality by 30%. I mean, we don't have many things out there that reduce mortality in that way.” Full stop- muscle is essential. If that is music to your ears, grab your weights and dive in! It’s about feeling capable and confident in yourself, making small improvements every single time you take part in a training session. In my opinion, there’s nothing better.

I’ve put together six exercises that can be done at home or on the road for when you can’t make it to the gym, or just want to squeeze in a quick workout. I highly recommend grabbing a heavy set of weights that you can safely maintain as you progress. The largest I have at home are 10/15 pound dumbbells, but when doing three sets of each exercise, that is plenty for me! I love working in a state of progressive overload, which is essentially being able to increase your weight while performing each set to your point of muscular fatigue. I also love the sense of accomplishment you feel when performing an exercise that when starting, thought there would be no way that you could complete it. That feeling of dropping the weights on the floor afterwards is so satisfying!

For each of the exercises below, aim for 3 sets of 10-12 reps each. Increase your weight as you go, decreasing the reps if you need. Make it work for whatever you’re feeling on that given day. Each of these exercises supports overall core strength while focusing on an isolated muscle group. So, when done as a whole routine, a total body workout!

Six Exercises for Strength Training at Home:

1. Front Squats:

Holding the dumbbells in each hand at the top of your shoulders, stand with feet slightly wider than shoulders with spine long and chest proud. Lower hips towards the floor while maintaining upright posture. Let the knees track over your big toes, so that they don’t rotate inward. Drive straight up from your glutes and return to standing tall.

2. Bicep Hammer Curls:

Standing with feet shoulder width apart and a slight bend in the knees, hold dumbbells directly in front of thighs with arms lengthened, palms facing in. Curl one dumbbell up to shoulder, contracting the bicep, while keeping the elbow tight to the ribcage and return back down. Repeat on other arm.

3. Upright Row:

Standing with feet shoulder width apart and a slight bend in the knees, hold dumbbells directly in front of thighs with knuckles pointing down, palms towards legs. Lift both arms up with elbows pointing out to sides, about chest height, activating shoulders and upper back, and return down towards thighs.

4. RDL (Romanian Deadlift):

Standing tall with feel slightly wider than shoulders and arms straight down towards thighs, slowly begin to hinge hips back, creating a small bend in knees, arms falling directly in line with shoulders, hands close to shins, never forward. Keep chest open, trying to maintain a flat back position with no lower back arch and abdominals engaged. Drive up from the hinge position emphasizing the glute connection, and return to a tall spine.

5. Single Arm Row:

Step one foot back into a parallel split stance, hinge hips back, creating a long spine, resting hand on forward leg for balance, and other hand holding weight with a lengthened arm directly below shoulder. Do a “row” action by pulling arm back towards hip to activate the upper back muscles, and return to a long arm. Repeat on other side.

6. Glute Bridge:

Lying down on the mat, place feet hip width apart with knees pointing towards ceiling. Place weights in hands on top of hip creases. Lift hips up into a bridge, activating glutes and hamstrings while maintaining a closed ribcage. Lower hips to floor.

I am such an enthusiast when it comes to learning about the body, and all things fitness, that I’d love to dive into the intricacies of the muscular system and how it really holds the key to health in a later post. But for now, I wanted to share a few general benefits of strength training along with some of my favorite exercises that are basic enough to do at home. I encourage you to grab your heavy dumbbells and hit the mat! Take it from me- never did I think I would see a day where I could use more than ten pounds when exercising. Now, here I am, entering this new decade stronger than ever, using 5-6x that amount of weight when I’m in the gym- I can’t even believe it myself. But the feeling of being able to do it outweighs the struggle, and the results are worth it. Consistency is key and building muscle really does require effort. It’s one of the things in this life that we can actually control by doing the hard work to see and feel the results. This series should only take about 20-30 minutes depending on your pace, but it is totally doable and will leave you pleasantly sore and energized.

This month went so fast, I can’t believe kids are already back in school! I always appreciate this transition though, back into more of a routine, even for me. Looking forward to cooler temps, fall flavors, and an exciting trip ahead.

I can’t let go of August without highlighting some favorite things. I’ll be sad to say goodbye to the summer berries, but we’ve had an amazing crop this year and I can never get enough. I’ll have to get my fill within the next few weeks before we make the transition into apple season, which, don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled about as well! I’ve also whipped up a batch of lemon & ginger shots (recipe below) that I blend up and freeze in the form of ice cubes. Once a week, especially now, which seems to be a heightened time for viruses to be going around, I let the ice cube melt in a glass, add some extra coconut water, and give myself a quick immunity boost. Highly recommend as the seasons change!

Two written pieces that stood out to me this month:

• On Substack, “The Great American Fitness Boom” by Derek Thompson, one of my favorite journalists: highly recommend this quick article attached below. He writes about the trajectory that much of the American population seems to be on in regard to fitness. It’s actually good news, backed by data, showing how as a whole, the interest in fitness is rapidly growing across our country. Being in the industry myself, I’ve witnessed first-hand what he has researched, and can agree that we’re on the right path to becoming healthier and choosing the correct modalities.

• Shark Heart by Emily Habeck: So far, my favorite book that I’ve read this year. This is Habeck’s debut novel from 2023 and I am anxiously awaiting the next. It’s hard to explain what this book is about without giving too much away, but essentially, it’s a story of compassion and grief, transition, and ultimately, unconditional love. The novel reads unexpectedly, a bit fantasy, filled with elements of theater, great white sharks, and human relationships of varying types. The writing is exquisite as well. I devoured this one!

Lastly, this summer I’ve rediscovered a hobby that took up so much time of mine as a kid- beading! If you have anxious hands, a busy brain, or just want something new to try, give beading a shot. It’s such a fun way to satisfy the creative part of your brain, but also tactile in a way that is so satisfying to just string beads on a wire. I’ve been really enjoying it, making gifts for friends, visiting bead stores around LA, and loving the finished products!

Unlocking a new (old) hobby at Beadahs in Santa Monica

It’s a consistent point of return. On this planet, my version of a landing pad- Cape Cod, Mass. Everyone that visits here has their own version of what their stay will consist of. It’s a corner of the country that is so unique and timeless, that not much has changed from when I first visited. For my family, we’ve been Centerville locals, tracing back to well over a century. Centerville is a small town located mid-Cape, near Hyannis, in Barnstable County. It’s as quaint as you would imagine from the name. My grandmother (who is 102 years old!) was raised there with her six other siblings and parents. She has one younger sister (101 years old!) who still lives a few miles down the road. The stories that these two tell are top notch- their memories are so vivid and they really are lifelong Cape Cod historians.

My grandparents bought the current house on Long Pond around 1980, and my Grammy still lives there today! The property would serve as a homecoming and place to retire in peace, after living in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. for my grandfather’s career as a physicist. My mom and her two siblings were born and raised in those suburbs so the Cape always served as a vacation spot for them too. I’ve had the great privilege to be able to visit Cape Cod every single year, mostly in the summers, but sometimes in the fall, for my Grammy’s birthday and to experience the Cape in a completely different way. A visit is always filled with plenty of family time, check-ins at our favorite places, walks to the beach, relaxing on the lake, and of course, Four Seas Ice Cream. There is usually a house full of people in the summer. Most of the time I’m sleeping on an air mattress on the floor by the front door, but sometimes I’m lucky enough to score the truly vintage basement, like I did this summer. We always come together for hours-long ‘Coffee Club’ in the mornings, with percolator-brewed coffee, made by my dad, who, for some reason, is the only one who can figure out how to use the thing! Time there passes slowly but in the best way, especially in the summer, when the days are endless and left open to possibility.

From Cape Cod by Henry David Thoreau, the quote above encapsulates the Cape in the perfect way. I’ve sat on Craigville Beach (seen below), reading said book, and have done just what Thoreau says. It’s a truly special place where memories are formed and continue to be built upon as the years go by. From the curved beaches to high-rolling sand dunes and sunsets you can only imagine, the 65-mile stretch of Cape Cod shines brilliantly, welcoming us year after year, and taking care of its natives in the best way possible.

It’s so hard to narrow down photos from over the years to capture the Cape’s essence, but wanted to share a peek into how we’ve spent time over the years. My grandparents started it all, shown in the center, the consummate hosts! Every photo of old has some tie to what we still do today- same people, same places, same traditions. It’s been amazing to share the home with countless friends and family over the years. We have even celebrated a family wedding that took place lakeside in the backyard!

In the heart of Centerville, on Main Street, you can find some of the most important pieces of history for the town, a dedication to World War II veterans, including my Grammy, who was a Marine, and three of her brothers (The Dunhams listed below). She was even honored on her 100th birthday by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (shown above) with a parade and all kinds of fanfare! What a gal! I always ask her about her tips for longevity- something I can get into further in a future post.

I’m always so impressed by how well-maintained the gardens have remained after my grandmother really put all of her heart and soul into them over the years. There’s even a greenhouse attached to the house to store equipment and plants in the winter. My uncle continues to do all the planting and watering, making sure everything looks great for Grammy and us too! She told me this year that she loves her “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” that my uncle devised for her so that she can admire them when she looks out the window while eating breakfast. We take plenty of strolls along the property admiring all of the different flowers, and are sometimes given the grand tour by the Head Gardener himself (my uncle-ha).

As I mentioned earlier, Four Seas Ice Cream is probably the most iconic place for us on the Cape. We even have a painting (shown below) done by my grandfather of me and my parents walking out when I was around two years old. This still hangs on the wall in my parents’ house and I love looking at it every time I’m home! Four Seas is a short walk away from the house, but we love to drive, pop the trunk, sit back there, and dive into our scoops. They’re celebrating their 91st year of operation this summer with lines still out the door and into the parking lot! I’m not surprised they’ve been around for so long because it is truly the best- a beloved institution on Cape Cod. This is also a place where we’ve seen plenty of Kennedys over the years. We love most flavors, but our hands-down favorite is the Cranberry Sherbet (pictured in last month’s Rundown), which you can’t get anywhere else in the world. You have to grab it when you can because there have been countless nights of disappointment when we get out of the car, walk up riddled with anxiety to the flavor list, and it’s marked with an ‘X’. Sold out. My dad often orders a pint, which originally started because of the ‘X’ on the sign. They have pints no matter what, so he’s made that transition, often giving up on a cone! We are always pushing it to customers waiting outside in the line. They need to know what’s up!

Around the corner from Four Seas is The Country Store, or what I grew up calling, “The Penny Candy Store.” This is another not-to-miss landmark in Centerville, selling all types of gifts, souvenirs, local artisan goods, and, of course, candy! You just fill up your basket, take it to the register, and they magically add up everything by the individual piece. I’d usually settle on some Caramel Creams, Sour Patch kids, fruity Tootsie Rolls, and Red Licorice. Throw in some Fireballs and Root Beer Barrels, and you’ll have your nostalgia fix.

Another tradition that we’ve been taking part in since I was a young kid is going to Cape Cod League baseball games. We’re baseball people, so when my dad was told by another family member that this was a thing, we immediately checked it out. We’ve been to games every single year and can’t believe how much it has grown! We used to sit on a hill at the Hyannis ballpark on blankets and now every field has sections upon sections of bleachers, some even have a stadium set-up. The league hosts college players from around the country to play on teams for different towns across the Cape. The players are hosted by a local family. They used to hold daytime summer jobs, but I’m not sure if that’s the case anymore. The Cape League is a wooden bat league so it prepares the guys for the pros! There have been over 1,000 former players who have gone on to play in the major leagues. Ten out of ten for the vibes and the experience!

I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface on all that is Cape Cod but will wrap it up here. The Cape is for everyone, and I’m lucky to have been able to have a place like this to return to annually. It’s been a place to have family reunions, create traditions, and simply recharge. Eternally grateful!

As the sun sets on a great summer, I look forward to returning again soon! I thought it would be nice to take a break from the health and wellness of the last few months to start this travel pop-up series. However, any way you take it, travel is good for the soul, promotes a healthy mindset, and we all need a break from time to time. Hope you enjoyed a small slice of the Cape!

I’m so excited to be back for the second installment of Lunch Club!

While walking through the Melrose Place Farmers Market over the past few weekends, two things had come to mind: one- how much of this summer goodness can I manage to wrangle back to the car and get safely home; and two- why don’t I do this every single week?! This particular farmers market is no more than a five minute drive or fifteen minute walk (which is usually less likely due to the haul that has to be carried) from my home. It’s always an option for something to do on a Sunday morning, but often, something else comes up, travel has taken a toll, or I’m just tired from the week that was. I guiltily laze around the apartment because it’s my one day to sleep in. The longer I procrastinate, the more likely it becomes that I just do not go. Not good! So, as we’re already in August, and I now have my Sundays free, I have made it a point to try and make it there as much as possible to set up for a successful week ahead and indulge in the final stretch of summer produce (which is incredible right now!). I’ve been taking advantage of arriving early before the market is overwhelmed with crowds, plus, beating the heat is a must.

Ryder is always ready to greet me when I come back with the goods and serves as the Inspector General while I unload. If he gives me a passing report, he can choose compensation for his hard work. Blueberries are the most coveted, with cucumbers coming in a close second. He can happily munch away on his nutritious rewards, while I indulge in (not pictured) the best Chicken & Mushroom Dumplings covered in chili crunch, from my dumpling stand friend, and a fresh Pistachio Croissant from Chaupain Bakery as a treat. Chaupain also makes the best sourdough bread, which I always try to grab!

My latest haul from the market inspired two of my favorite recipes for Summer Lunch Club! These are both timeless, well-tested, and have been approved by members of my own family for generations. I’ve chosen two salads that can be eaten on their own or alongside a protein option; think grilled chicken or shrimp, a robust piece of baked salmon; or even a few pieces of crusty & toasted sourdough! Bonus: you’ll need only one short list of ingredients, hopefully having some already at home.

Dad’s T(omato).C(ucumber).O(nion). Salad:

The T.C.O! This was a staple growing up, my dad’s absolute favorite, passed on from my Grammy, his mom, a true 100% Italian, and the best cook, period. She cooked for a family of seven, so she knew what she was doing! I can’t say that as a very young kid, I was a fan of this one, but by the time I was able to appreciate good food, I had finally seen the light, and it’s a 10 out of 10! Perfect on its own or as a side. In the summer, an absolute must with a grilled steak, some chicken thighs, or a fresh piece of a grilled fish of your choice. Add some crispy potatoes, and you have a perfect summer meal. I have a vivid memory from growing up of a huge glass bowl always sitting in the fridge, filled with this salad, soaking up all the juices, and ready to grab at all hours of the day or night. My dad was right about how good it was all of those years, as I’m sure he’d be happy to know. I can still hear him saying, “just eat it, Lynds! It’s the best!”

1. Gather your ingredients. This one is as simple as it’s going to get! You’ll need:

• Two tomatoes of your choice, I love them on the vine in the summer- roughly chopped

• Two cucumbers- peeled and chopped into quarter chunks

• Half of a red onion- thinly sliced

• Mix of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Red Wine Vinegar to your taste (usually a 3:1 ratio)

• 1-2 teaspoons of oregano (to your taste)

• Pinch of salt

• Fresh ground pepper

2. Combine all ingredients into a large bowl, including the dressing components, and mix well.

3. Let marinate in the refrigerator for a few hours, or eat right away, but it does get even zestier the longer it sits!

In a real life situation last week, I paired the T.C.O. with some leftover salmon and asparagus, all from the farmers market, for a not-so-sad leftover lunch:

Summer Orzo Pasta Salad:

We’ve all had some basic version of a summer pasta salad. This one, inspired by a traditional Greek salad, kicks it up a notch. The flavors hit just right with its fresh ingredients, including my favorite Feta Cheese from Brother’s Products, another popular Melrose Place Farmers Market stop. I love the crunch of the yellow bell pepper, the zing of the fresh squeezed lemon, and the herby finish from fresh parsley. Orzo goes a long way when it’s cooked, and allows for more of a filling lunch. Again, this can be eaten in a bowl on its own, or alongside your choice of protein. I’d recommend the same options from before with the T.C.O Salad. Chickpeas, white beans, or tuna would be great mixed in as well.

1. Round up all of your ingredients. You’ll need:

• One cup dry orzo (follow instructions on package on how to prepare). Once it’s cooked, I like to strain and leave in the refrigerator in a metal bowl to cool while I chop up the remaining ingredients.

• One medium sized tomato- chopped

• One large cucumber- peeled and chopped

• One quarter of a red onion- chopped

• One yellow bell pepper- chopped

• About one cup of fresh spinach- chopped

• 1/2 cup fresh parsley- finely chopped

• 1/4 cup Kalamata olives- chopped

• Half of a lemon- squeezed

• EVOO & Red Wine Vinegar to your taste (I like a 3:1 ratio)

• One teaspoon dried oregano

• Pinch of salt & few grinds of black pepper

2. Once all components are ready, add to chilled bowl of cooked orzo. Add the EVOO & vinegar, freshly squeezed lemon juice, along with oregano, salt, and pepper. Give it a thorough mix, making sure to coat all of the orzo.

3. Serve it up in a large bowl and dig in! This one also gets better over the next few days.

I like to keep meals simple around here for lunch, especially in the summer, when it’s really too hot to cook! These are just a couple of options that I keep in the rotation to pair with whatever else I’ve chosen to make in a given week. Living in Southern California, I take advantage of the seasonal produce as much as I can, and summer is a time when it is really showcased. From the juiciest berries, the melt-in-your-mouth tomatoes, and the sweetest stone fruits, I’ve had a great summer of preparing meals, and look forward to squeezing the freshness out of the season for the remaining weeks!

As July comes to a close, the heat seems to be rising here in Los Angeles, but I’m looking forward to a relatively chill month ahead. Spending time traveling to the complete opposite end of the country always brings excitement and gratitude, but also tires me out! Getting to and from Cape Cod, MA is a twelve hour (door to door) expedition on the best day with perfect luck. This time, I had a little bit of a run-in with Mother Nature on the way back, and, of course, the classic “mechanical issues” delay which led to a crew time-out and a completely different aircraft that we had to trek through the terminal to find. It’s ok! That is the one flaw of summer travel! To be expected. Happy to have finally taken off. I will say that landing at LAX at 2:30am is not for the faint of heart, but I feel like I earned a special travel badge for making it through!

On the East Coast, besides spending time in Cape Cod with my family while visiting my amazing grandmother (who is 102!), I was able to spend a few days with two great LA friends in Boston who had also flown in for a Cape vacation. What a time! Boston was feeling itself! Everyone was out and about, taking full advantage of the summer months, and we were happy to participate. From Beacon Hill to Newbury Street, we covered a serious amount of ground, indulging in some excellent refreshments along the way. I love visiting at least once a year and it was so fun to share it with friends. More to come on Cape Cod next month! I’ve been going there my entire life and can’t wait to share more about this special place.

Back in LA, I celebrated five years since Ryder’s adoption! My little guy, I can’t believe how fast it’s gone, and I’m so grateful for every second of seeing his sweet face, the thousands of walks that have been taken, and close to a million treats that have been consumed. It will never get old seeing the faces of strangers light up when we pass. He is one of a kind! We’ve also been taking in the city, soaking up the long summer days, hitting up some new spots, and visiting our old favorites.

Two quick book recommendations! One- The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami, a novel that takes place in the not-so-distant future, which maybe hits a little too close to home, given the temperature of our current society, but was such an interesting and thought-provoking read dealing with one’s dreams being under surveillance. Two- All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker, recommended by a friend, and did not disappoint! If you love a sweeping novel covering a generations-long search for a missing person (or persons), that contains touches of mystery and tragedy, this is your next read.
